A jornada interna da mente e do coração



Aquele que se arrependeu viaja para o Senhor. O caminho até Deus é uma jornada interna realizada na mente e no coração. É, portanto, necessário sintonizar os pensamentos da mente e a disposição do coração de modo que o espírito do homem sempre esteja com o Senhor, como se unido com Ele. Aquele que está assim sintonizado é constantemente iluminado pela luz interna, e recebe em si mesmo os raios do resplendor espiritual (como diz Teodoreto), como Moisés, cuja face foi glorificada no Monte porque ele estava iluminado por Deus. David se refere a isto: “A luz da tua aprovação, oh Senhor, foi vertida sobre nós.” (Sl. Iv. 6). O meio pelo qual este estado pode ser obtido é através da oração da mente feita no coração. Somente quando esta é formada a visão da mente se tornará clara, e o espírito, contemplando Deus claramente, receberá Dele o poder para ver e afastar tudo aquilo que poderia envergonhá-lo diante de Deus.



Contudo, existem muitos que esperam se aproximar de Deus, meramente, através de atos e palavras externas. Eles vivem nesta expectativa, mas nunca a efetivam, pois não seguem o caminho correto. Para tais pessoas fazemos o seguinte apelo: aproxime-se de Deus com a mente e o coração e você será iluminado e não mais será derrotado pelo inimigo, que neste momento – a despeito de toda a sua boa conduta externa – constantemente lhe subjuga e lhe faz envergonhar pelos seus pensamentos e pelos sentimentos do seu coração. Aproximar-se de Deus em sua mente e coração lhe dará poder sobre todos os movimentos da alma, e o poder para envergonhar o inimigo, sempre que ele tentar envergonhar você.



The inner journey of the mind and heart (p.73)



He who has repented travels towards the Lord. The way to God is an inner journey accomplished in the mind and heart. It is necessary so to attune the thoughts of the mind and the disposition of the heart that the spirit of man will always be with the Lord, as if joined with Him. He who is thus attuned is constantly enlightened by inner light, and receives in himself the rays of spiritual radiance (as Theodoret says), like Moses, whose face was glorified on the Mount because he was illumined by God. David refers to this, "The light of thy countenance, O Lord, has been marked upon us' (Ps. iv. 7. Sept.). The means whereby this state can be achieved is prayer of the mind made in the heart. Only when this takes shape will the sight of the mind become clear, and the spirit, beholding God clearly, will receive from Him the power to see and drive away everything which could put it to shame before God.



Yet there are many who expect to approach God merely by outer words and deeds. They live in expectation, but they never come near; for they do not follow the right way. To such we make this appeal: approach God with the mind and heart and you will be enlightened and will no longer be defeated by the enemy, who at present—despite all your external correctness— constantly overcomes you and puts you to shame in your thoughts and in the feelings of your heart. Drawing near to God in your mind and heart will give you power over all other movements of the soul, and power to put the enemy to shame whenever he attempts to shame you.

Ore como se começasse a orar pela primeira vez



Você nunca deve considerar qualquer trabalho espiritual como firmemente estabelecido, e isto é especialmente verdadeiro para a oração; por isto, sempre ore como se começasse pela primeira vez. Quando fazemos algo pela primeira vez, nos achegamos com frescor e com um recém nascido entusiasmo. Se ao iniciar a orar você sempre abordar a tarefa como se ainda nunca tivesse orado apropriadamente, e somente agora, pela primeira vez, deseja assim fazê-lo, você sempre irá orar com um zelo fresco e vivo. E tudo irá bem.



Se você não é bem sucedido em sua oração, não espere ter sucesso em nenhuma outra coisa. É a raiz de tudo.





Pray as if beginning prayer for the first time (p.74)



You must never regard any spiritual work as firmly established, and this is especially true of prayer; but always pray as if beginning for the first time. When we do a thing for the first time, we come to it fresh and with a new-born enthusiasm. If, when starting to pray, you always approach it as though you had never yet prayed properly, and only now for the first time wished to do so, you will always pray with a fresh and lively zeal. And all will go well.



If you are not successful in your prayer, do not expect success in anything. It is the root of all.
